Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a few questions we are regularly asked about our services. If you want to know more, or have any other questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch using any of the contact methods opposite.

How do you get paid for your work?

We are remunerated by fees but commissions, or other income credited to the client's account, can offset these.

How are you regulated?

We are directly regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

Are you tied to any particular company?

We are totally independent.

We are not tied to any provider and are free to recommend whatever we consider to be in the best interests of our clients.

What about ongoing advice?

At Means & Company, we want to make sure that your financial plan is always kept up to date. That is why we offer to review your financial strategy every year.

How well qualified are you?

Mearns & Company are Chartered Financial Planners, which demonstrates our exceptionally high level of professionalism and dedication to personal development through ongoing training and qualifications.

Corporate Chartered Financial Planner status is an exclusive title. In January 2008 Mearns & Company were one of only six firms in Scotland to have achieved this designation.

Will I have to take your advice?

Absolutely not!

We will only give the advice that we consider to be appropriate for you. At the end of the day, however, the decision is yours.

We will allow you the time to reflect and decide, if you need this.

Will you blind me with jargon?

No.

We take pride in communicating clearly with clients. We want you to fully understand all aspects of your financial affairs and we will help you to do this.

Will I simply be sold products?

No.

We will gather all the necessary information about your financial affairs to enable us to conduct a comprehensive review of them.

We will then send you a report telling you where you are now and what you need to do to achieve your financial goals.

What will happen if I don't want to follow any of your advice?

This doesn't happen often but, if it does, we will accept your decision regretfully.

We will then submit a fee for the work we have done and, after its settlement, we will make no further contact with you.

If you change your mind in the future and want to come back, we will be happy to see you.
